Medina Spirit was a gutsy black horse of breeding that was less than classic. He knew nothing about his breeding though, and so he tried every time he ran. He won his first start and was sold privately to Zedan Racing. He went on to win the Grade 3 Robert B Lewis at Santa Anita after finishing second in the Grade 3 Sham. He ran second again in the Grade 2 San Felipe and then second in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby. Watching these races you could see what a tryer he was. I had the pleasure of going to the 147th Kentucky Derby and photograph him winning the race. With a lot of drama and upset about a positive test for betamethasone, which is prescribed for skin issues, he was disqualified by the commissions in Kentucky from that Derby win. As far as I see it, he won the race. He came back to California to win the Shared Belief Stake, then the Awesome Again Grade 1. In the Breeders Cup Classic he finished second behind Knicks Go. He had earned $3,545,200 racing. On December 6, 2021, he died at Santa Anita Racetrack after a workout. It was a sad day in racing that day, many tears were shed for the small black horse with the big heart. He is buried at Old Friends in Kentucky.
